Collection: Yakhaare
Outside of the Himalayas, the primitive yaks, which are related to cattle, are only found in Mongolia. The approximately 600,000 yaks graze in the high mountains at an altitude of 2,500 meters in ecological niches that are inaccessible to other animal species.
Nomadic herder families comb the yak hair by hand in the spring in a traditional manner, without causing any harm to the animals. From each animal, they obtain only two handfuls of its fine undercoat. This protects the animals from the 40-degree cold in winter and the 40-degree heat in summer. Yak hair comes in three natural colors: rich dark brown, elegant light brown, and rare shades of gray, which are only found in Mongolia.
Key natural properties of yak hair products are their high insulating capacity as well as their resistance to moisture and odors. This reduces the need for washing and makes yak hair ideal for durable outdoor and active wear, as well as for socks and hosiery.
The processors and manufacturers of yak hair, like the nomadic cooperatives, are members of the Mongolian Eco-Textile Export Cluster. Through the cooperation of all stakeholders and adherence to standards, it ensures transparency and sustainability in supply chains and products.
More information about the textile cluster and its members can be found here.
